Introduction

Daegu is an inland metropolis of southeastern Korea (North latitude: 35.52°, east longitude: 128.36°).
It has some of the highest temperatures in Korea due to being a basin that is surrounded by mountains, including the Palgongsan and Biseulsan. During the Joseon dynasty, it housed the administrative seat of the southeastern provinces. In the modern age, Daegu became a hub of the textile industry. On July 1, 1981, it was elevated to direct management by the central government after absorbing three districts of Dalseong-gun (Wolbae-eup, Seongseo-eup, Gongsan-myeon), one district of Chilgok-gun (Chilgok-eup), and two districts of Gyeongsan-gun (Ansim-eup, Gosan-myeon). On March 1, 1995, it absorbed Dalseong-gun. On July 1, 2023, it absorbed Gunwi-gun. Daegu is comprised of seven districts (gu) and two counties (gun).

Climate

Daegu has minimal rainfall. Its highest recorded temperature is 40˚C, while the lowest is -20.2˚C. Daegu has a relatively high average summertime temperature. A 1942 record of 40 degrees Celsius is the second highest temperature on record in Korea. Due to such extremes in temperature, Daegu, unlike the rest of southern Korea, has its own climate classification (“Special Daegu Climate”).

  • Spring (March~May): Spring in Daegu is usually mild and dry. Cherry blossoms in full bloom are one of the city’s best attractions.
  • Summer (June~August): The hottest time of year. Humid and hot, with average highest daytime temperature exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.
  • Fall (September~November): Fall in Daegu is characterized by a welcome drop in humidity and clear skies. The changing colors of the leaves are especially beautiful.
  • Winter (December~February): Lowest average daytime temperatures sometimes drop to sub-zero. Snows occasionally.
